Native Elderberry

Elderberries: Fire-Resistant Native Plants for California Landscapes

Species we plan to offer include:

  • Blue Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp. caerulea) – A drought-tolerant shrub/tree common throughout Southern California; produces clusters of bluish-purple berries loved by wildlife.
  • Mexican Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana) – Often found in riparian areas, this species thrives in varied conditions and makes an excellent addition to native gardens.

Availability

While our nursery is still growing toward full plant production, we are preparing to offer elderberry seeds for purchase soon. This provides gardeners across California with the opportunity to begin propagation at home.
