About Wildfire Resilient Landscapes and Native Plants Nursery

Our Mission

Wildfire Resilient Landscapes is dedicated to advancing environmental and community resilience by viewing the world itself as a connected landscape where natural, urban, and human systems intersect. We work to restore balance between people and place through education, sustainable design, and ecological restoration that reduce wildfire risk, promote biodiversity, and strengthen climate adaptation across all environments.

Our Vision

We envision a world where every landscape, from forests and rivers to cities and neighborhoods, thrives in harmony with natural processes. A world where resilience is cultivated through collaboration, inclusion, and stewardship, ensuring that human progress and ecological health coexist for generations to come.

What makes a landscape resilient

Wildfire Resilient Landscapes

Wildfire Non-Resilient Landscapes

Wildfire Non-Resilient Landscapes

(Landscapes that anticipate, absorb, and recover from wildfire while maintaining ecological and social balance.)

are ..

Natural Systems

  • Native chaparral and oak woodlands with deep roots and natural fire adaptation

  • Grasslands dominated by native perennial species that regrow after fire

  • Mixed-age forests with space between canopies and minimal fuel buildup

  • Riparian corridors that maintain soil moisture and act as fire breaks

  • Regenerative post-fire habitats managed to support biodiversity recovery

Human-Designed Systems

  • Defensible-space communities using native, fire-adapted plant palettes

  • Greenbelts and shaded fuel breaks integrated with trails and recreation zones

  • Homes built with ignition-resistant materials and ember-resistant vents

  • Community gardens and open spaces that double as fire buffers

  • Roadside and utility easements managed for low-fuel vegetation

Social & Cultural Systems

  • Communities practicing defensible-space maintenance and shared stewardship

  • Collaborative fire-safe councils connecting residents, agencies, and nonprofits

  • Educational landscapes teaching fire ecology and native restoration

  • Indigenous fire stewardship areas using prescribed burns for renewal

Wildfire Non-Resilient Landscapes

Wildfire Non-Resilient Landscapes

Wildfire Non-Resilient Landscapes

(Landscapes that amplify ignition risk, fuel spread, or post-fire degradation.)

are..

Natural Systems Under Stress

  • Monoculture pine plantations or overstocked forests with heavy ladder fuels

  • Non-native grass invasions (e.g., fountain grass, cheatgrass) that ignite easily

  • Eroded hillsides with bare soil prone to debris flows after fire

  • Riparian areas overtaken by arundo or tamarisk, both highly flammable

Built & Managed Systems

  • Suburban sprawl in wildland–urban interface zones with minimal buffer planning

  • Highly combustible ornamental plantings such as juniper, cypress, or eucalyptus

  • Unmanaged vacant lots or rights-of-way accumulating dry debris

  • Aging infrastructure that sparks ignitions (e.g., faulty power lines)

Social & Cultural Systems

  • Reactive rather than proactive policies on vegetation and land use

  • Fragmented emergency communication systems

  • Underfunded community preparedness programs

  • Loss of traditional ecological knowledge and stewardship continuity

From Stumps to Resilience: Planting the Future

Tree stumps on sidewalks are eyesores, safety hazards, and missed opportunities for climate action. At Wildfire Resilient Landscapes, we replace stumps with fire-resilient, drought-tolerant native trees. These trees cool the streets, support wildlife, reduce wildfire risk, and contribute to creating healthier, more resilient neighborhoods.
